Examples of data/analysis problems

  • Germany: A new product launch was estimated based on the sales generated by an average product in the market, as measured by syndicated data. Fortunately, a validation exercise using direct POS from a major retailer exposed the syndicated data as being 50% below the actual sales figures of the market!
  • UK: One major retailer has the authority to mask any item or brand that they do not want reported at both the account and market level by a major syndicated audit Company. Therefore, the category and segment totals are usually understated or not accurate, and you are never quite sure what products and what volume is missing from the database!
  • Netherlands: Syndicated data has a very high level of market coverage. Unfortunately UPC –level data is usually not available. Therefore, a true Assortment analysis cannot be completed with accuracy.
  • Mexico: Based on syndicated market data, the distribution measure is based on the category ACV, not overall market (that’s a good thing). Unfortunately, the ACV is recalculated each week based on each outlet’s sales. Therefore, a big promotion in one chain can produce wild swings in a product’s distribution, even though the store count stayed exactly the same!
  • Czech Republic: Men’s Grooming Appliances are not tracked in this market because the category was too small for the syndicated data suppliers to set it up. TABS Group’s proprietary methodology coupled with consumer research identified that category penetration in this country was twice as high as in the US, and they identified two retailers that accounted for the majority of category sales.  A significant volume opportunity was identified for the client in all EU markets as part of the European Strategic Plan!
